About

About Me

My name is Jody Woodcock and I am a counsellor and Registered Social Worker. I have been working in the field of mental health since 2009, supporting individuals, couples and families. I now own and operate a multi-disciplinary private practice in Grey Bruce Ontario. I am privileged to have the opportunity to walk with people as they work to overcome life’s challenges and believe in matching the strengths of every client with compassion and empathy.

I have supported clients as they learn about their mental health conditions, their moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviours and I have guided clients as they learn how to take control of their lives and response to challenging situations with healthy coping skills. I have witnessed couples and families rebuild relationships and learn to communicate effectively again. In a society where it is often considered taboo to talk about death and dying, I have a passion for understanding grief and supporting others in their grief journey.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Social Development and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Waterloo  as well as  a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP) from Yorkville University. I was honoured to have my research on Ethical Practice published in the Ethical Connections Journal.

In my free time, you will find me out in nature hiking with my dog or searching for treasures at local thrift shops.

It’s normal to feel anxious and stressed from time to time, but ongoing anxiety and worry that are difficult to control and interfere in your day to day living might be a sign of and anxiety disorder.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns and can occur in children and adults. Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, OCD and more.

Anxiety can improve with by speaking with a counsellor, learning coping skills and using relaxation techniques.

Depression is a mood disorder that is characterized by feelings of sadness and loss of interest in activities that used to bring you pleasure. Depression can affect how you think, feel and behave. You might experience sleep difficulties. Depression can make completing daily tasks difficult and you might feel like life is hopeless. Most people with depression start to feel better with psychotherapy, medication or both.

Relationships with our intimate partner can be a source of love, support and understanding, but being in a relationship can also be difficult. Our connection to others impacts our personal well-being. Our ability to connect with our partner can be hampered by poor communication, opinions, different perspectives and how we respond emotionally. Counselling can help couples to understand how relational patterns impact the individual and the couple. Couple can learn how to communicate effectively, establish and maintain boundaries and connect with one another on a more intimate level.

Grief and Bereavement

Almost everyone will experience grief and loss in their lifetime and while there are no absolute stages of grief and no single way to mourn, every person has a unique experience and response to their loss. We experience loss in many ways – through sudden, unexpected death, miscarriage, infant loss, job loss, the ending of a relationship or through chronic illness, aging, life transitions, end of life planning and anticipating the death of a loved one.

Trauma

Trauma happens when an event occurs that leaves you temporarily overwhelmed or emotionally distressed. Some people are diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Trauma therapy is a form of therapy that can help an individual deal with the emotional response that happens following a traumatic event. Not everyone who experiences a trauma will have long-term negative consequences, but trauma can affect your mental health, your job, your finances and how you connect and relate to others. Counselling can help you if you are unable to cope with the trauma you experienced.

Child and Youth Therapy

Children and youth may not be able to process their emotions or articulate their problems like adults. Counselling with children and youth can look a lot like ordinary playtime with engaging activities, games and art, however, play can allow the therapist to gain insight into a child’s presenting issue, their emotions and behaviour.  Through play-based counselling, a child can work through unresolved trauma and learn new ways to cope and behave.
